CIPM Level 1 September 2026: 45-Day Study Plan for Busy Candidates

Preparing for CIPM Level 1 September 2026 in only 45 days is challenging, especially for candidates who are working full-time. However, a shorter timeline can still work if the plan is focused, realistic, and built around the official learning outcomes. CIPM Level 1 is not just a definitions exam. It tests whether candidates can calculate, interpret, compare, and explain investment performance concepts clearly.

The key is to avoid passive reading. A busy candidate should study in short, high-quality sessions that combine concept review, calculation practice, and mistake analysis.

Understand the 45-Day Challenge

CIPM Level 1 covers Ethics and Professional Standards, performance measurement, return attribution, benchmark analysis, risk measurement, performance appraisal, and investment performance presentation, including GIPS Standards. The curriculum is technical but practical. Candidates need to understand how performance is measured, why results differ, how risk affects appraisal, and how performance should be presented fairly.

With 45 days, the goal is not to read slowly from beginning to end. The goal is to build exam-ready competence. Candidates should aim for consistent daily study, ideally 90 minutes on weekdays and longer sessions on weekends. Missing days should be avoided because the schedule is compressed.

Days 1–7: Ethics and Performance Evaluation Basics

Start with Ethics and the role of performance evaluation in the investment management process. Ethics should be introduced early because it requires judgment, not last-minute memorization. Focus on professional conduct, conflicts of interest, fair presentation, and corrective actions.

Then study the purpose of performance evaluation. Candidates should understand the major components of performance measurement, attribution, appraisal, and presentation. This foundation helps the rest of the curriculum feel connected rather than fragmented.

Days 8–17: Return Measurement and Data Integrity

The next ten days should focus on return measurement because it is central to Level 1. Study holding period returns, portfolio returns, stock and bond returns, real versus nominal returns, gross-of-fees versus net-of-fees returns, pre-tax versus post-tax returns, and leveraged versus cash basis returns.

Pay special attention to time-weighted and money-weighted returns. Many candidates confuse these concepts, but they are essential. Time-weighted return is more useful for evaluating manager performance when external cash flows are outside the manager’s control. Money-weighted return reflects the investor’s actual experience with the timing and size of cash flows.

Data integrity should also be reviewed during this phase. Understand data quality, governance, corporate actions, return discrepancies, currency issues, and when a prior-period return may need restatement.

Days 18–27: Return Attribution and Benchmarks

This is one of the most important phases. Return attribution helps explain why a portfolio outperformed or underperformed. Candidates should understand return attribution, return contribution, risk attribution, allocation effect, selection effect, interaction effect, and the differences between Brinson models and factor models.

Benchmark analysis is equally important. Learn the difference between a benchmark and a market index, the properties of a valid benchmark, types of benchmarks, index construction methods, custom benchmarks, hedge fund benchmarks, liability-based benchmarks, and benchmark misspecification.

For every attribution question, ask: what decision created the result? For every benchmark question, ask: is this benchmark appropriate for the portfolio’s objective and strategy?

Days 28–34: Risk Measurement and Portfolio Characteristics

Risk measurement should be studied with both formulas and interpretation. Focus on variance, standard deviation, mean absolute deviation, tracking risk, beta, downside risk, drawdown, value at risk, stress testing, and scenario analysis.

Candidates should also review equity portfolio characteristics such as sector exposure, market capitalization, valuation ratios, dividend yield, liquidity, volatility, and investment style. The objective is not just to calculate measures, but to understand what they reveal about portfolio risk and behavior.

Days 35–39: Performance Appraisal

Performance appraisal asks whether results were good after considering risk. Study active management skill, skill versus luck, gross and net returns, Sharpe ratio, Treynor ratio, Jensen’s alpha, information ratio, appraisal ratio, Sortino ratio, and Calmar ratio.

Do not memorize ratios in isolation. Connect each ratio to the risk measure it uses and the question it answers. This will help you choose the right measure in exam-style questions.

Days 40–43: GIPS and Performance Presentation

Use these days for investment performance presentation and GIPS Standards. Focus on firm definition, input data, valuation, external cash flows, fees, composite construction, and fair presentation. GIPS can feel technical, but it is highly logical when studied as a transparency and comparability framework.

Days 44–45: Final Review

Use the final two days for your error log, formulas, confusing terms, Ethics, GIPS, and mixed questions. Avoid starting large new topics. Your goal is to strengthen recall, reduce careless mistakes, and enter the exam with a clear method.

Conclusion CIPM Level 1 September 2026

A 45-day CIPM Level 1 September 2026 study plan must be disciplined and selective. Busy candidates should focus on the official learning outcomes, prioritize return measurement, attribution, benchmarks, risk, appraisal, and GIPS, and convert every mistake into targeted review. With consistency and active practice, 45 days can become a focused path to exam readiness.
