The final month before the CIPM Level II exam should not be used to reread the entire curriculum from the beginning. At this stage, your goal is different. You need to turn weak topics into exam-ready skills.
CIPM Level II is more advanced than Level I because it tests application through scenarios and multiple-choice questions. CFA Institute states that the Level II exam has 80 questions, lasts 3 hours, and focuses on more complex performance appraisal and manager selection decisions.
That means your final month should focus on interpretation, judgment, and speed.
Start With the Level II Topic Weights
The best final-month strategy begins with the official topic weights.
For CIPM Level II, Manager Selection is the largest topic at 30%. Performance Attribution Analysis represents 15–20%, Performance Evaluation and Appraisal represents 15–20%, Ethics and Professionalism represents 15%, Portfolio Performance Presentation represents 10–15%, and Performance Measurement represents 5–10%.
This matters because not all weak topics deserve equal time.
If you are weak in Manager Selection, Attribution, or Appraisal, you should fix those areas first. They represent the core of the Level II exam.
Week 1: Diagnose Weak Topics
The first week should be used to identify your weakest areas.
Do not simply ask, “Which topic do I dislike?”
Instead, review your practice results and classify mistakes into three groups:
Mistake Type | What It Means |
Knowledge gap | You did not know the concept |
Application gap | You knew the idea but used it incorrectly |
Reading error | You missed a detail in the scenario |
This is especially important for Level II because scenario questions often test how well you interpret context.
A candidate may know the formula but still answer incorrectly because they missed the benchmark, time horizon, client objective, or manager constraint.
Week 2: Repair Manager Selection and Appraisal
The second week should focus on Manager Selection and Performance Evaluation and Appraisal.
Manager Selection is the largest Level II topic. CFA Institute describes it as building skills in manager performance evaluation and selection, including how to build portfolios of investment managers to achieve a client’s risk and return objectives.
This topic requires judgment.
Do not choose a manager only because the return is higher. Ask:
Is the benchmark appropriate?
Is the performance repeatable?
Was risk controlled?
Does the strategy fit the client?
Did the manager show skill or simply benefit from exposure?
Are the fees, style, and process suitable?
Performance appraisal should be studied with the same mindset. The key question is whether results came from skill, luck, risk exposure, or benchmark effects.
Week 3: Strengthen Attribution and Presentation
The third week should focus on Performance Attribution Analysis and Portfolio Performance Presentation.
Attribution helps candidates identify sources of portfolio risk and return. At Level II, the challenge is not only calculating or recognizing attribution effects. The challenge is interpreting what those effects mean for the manager’s decisions.
When reviewing attribution, ask:
Did allocation help or hurt?
Did selection add value?
Was the benchmark suitable?
Did currency or sector exposure matter?
What does the result say about manager skill?
Then review Portfolio Performance Presentation. This topic matters because performance information must be presented fairly and accurately. CFA Institute describes this area as preparing performance presentations that fairly reflect the performance of a firm or portfolio.
In the final month, look for disclosure issues, misleading comparisons, inappropriate benchmarks, and incomplete performance presentation.
Week 4: Simulate the Exam
The final week should be about execution.
Use the CFA Institute Learning Ecosystem to review the curriculum and follow your study plan. CFA Institute describes the Learning Ecosystem as a digital tool where candidates can access the complete CIPM curriculum and personalized study plans.
Take a timed practice session under exam conditions.
Then review only the mistakes that can realistically improve your score.
Do not try to relearn everything in the final few days. Focus on:
Manager Selection decisions
Appraisal interpretation
Attribution results
Ethics traps
Presentation and disclosure issues
Scenario reading speed
Repeated mistakes
